Introduction: The Present & The Future

Hi!

My name is Austin and I am a senior Public Relations major with a minor in French. The coolest thing about my major is that it is a crossover between marketing, advertisement, business and journalism. Frequently people believe that PR is a part of Price College at OU, but it is actually a part of the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Feel free to learn more about the college by visiting http://www.ou.edu/gaylord.html.

Currently, I am a Social Media & Content Intern for High Five Media Group. I am responsible for managing various social media accounts for certain clients to create rapport and stimulate engagements on their feeds. In this day and age, social media is the way people check reviews, provide feedback and learn more about companies and organizations. I also contribute content to LINKED magazine.

Long term, my goal is to work for a nation-wide corporation and be the head of the PR department. I want to be responsible for executing campaigns for a company that creates a different. I want to sit on a non-profit board that benefits the community that I will reside in. The goal here is to benefit the community and myself.

I recently adopted a Bernese Mountain Dog named Henri. He is 4 months old. Henri enjoys short walk, playing with the neighbor’s cat, Cici and cuddling in the morning. My partner and I rescued Henri through an organization called BARC (Bernese Animal Rescue Coalition). He was being auctioned-off to known puppy mills in Illinois where he would spend the rest of his life breeding and inbreeding. Now, Henri gets to spend his days being a part of our family and keeping all of us entertained.

There is so much I could share about myself, but really the best way to do so is to connect with me via social media or engage in person-to-person conversations. I hope you enjoyed reading about my current life and future aspirations! Feel free to comment with questions or share some of your future goals. :)

  1. What a cool internship to have, Austin! I am a huge fan of social media as a way for people to create and connect and share; I mostly use Twitter but I use a great service called Inoreader which also checks Facebook accounts and pulls those feeds in with everything else I'm subscribed to. Maybe you will want to try some social media storytelling styles this semester. The faux Twitter and Facebook and chat generators are so much fun, and they do indeed represent a new way of presenting the characters and events of a story! Someone even did a RateMyProfs take-off for the Indian Epics class; very fun stuff: Rate My Rishi

And maybe Henri can star in a story of two also! :-)

  2. Hey Austin,

The internship that you were talking about sounds super interesting and fun! I think its pretty cool that you're minoring in french, I wish I could speak a different language but all I know is a little bit of Latin. Henri looks like a super fun and sweet puppy! I really hope you're able to get your dream job and get to be head of PR for a company one day.

  3. Nice to meet you Austin! Your internship for High Five Media sounds awesome. I have always found advertising and journalism interesting and I thought about doing journalism for a while. However, I decided to go the medical route instead to become a Physician’s Assistant. I still love writing and learning about journalism. I think your future aspirations are very admirable and I wish you luck in all your endeavors and I’m sure I’ll be seeing your name again someday linked to a company that has done a lot of good for the community! Your dog is adorable and I love that you rescued him from an unhappy future. It was great getting to know you a little!

  4. Hey Austin,

It seems like you're doing really well for yourself! I admire that you seem to be really doing something that you enjoy doing and that you have realistic and achievable goals for the future. It's really cool to see.

I also see that you're a dog person, which is pretty cool! Though I've never rescued a dog, after reading about your story I'm definitely going to think about the next time.

    Thanks for sharing!

  5. Hey Austin, it looks like you are a very busy man with your major, studies and everything. It is very nice of you for adopting Henri, he is a very cute dog. You did a good choice of minoring in French but I wonder why... Do you have any plans of working in France in the future or is it just because it is better to speak another language in your major. Anyway, I wanted to let you know that French is my first language so if you ever need any help with your classes, do not hesitate to ask me, I will be happy to help. Best of luck in your semester and I look forward to reading more of your posts.

  6. Austin,

It's a good thing that you have such a clear idea of what you want to do with your life. It makes it easier to choose between different life paths. I also like your dog, he seems very cute. That was a good thing you did. Thanks for sharing, good luck with the rest of the upcoming semester.

  7. Austin,
What an amazing thing you did rescuing your dog. My roommate and I are gonna get a dog and are going to rescue ours. Your internship sounds like a lot of fun and I'm really jealous of it. How did you get interested in your line of work? I've always wonder what a social media person does. I would love to learn more of what you do. I can't wait to read your stories.

  8. Hey Austin, it is nice to meet you. It looks like you are ready to be done with your senior year. I like the breed of your dog. I have a half husky german shepherd mix. I think it shows how much you care about your dog that you saved him. Good luck this semester and I look forward to seeing some of your posts.

  9. Austin,
Henri looks like he was such a great addition to your family!! He is precious! Rescued dogs are the BEST dogs! Puppy mills are vile places, and I personally think they should be completely outlawed. Not to get weirdly political on here, but if you haven't already, you should look into state question 777, assuming you're registered to vote here in OK. Part of it has to do with puppy mills and cock fighting, another horror.
Anyway, very nice to meet you :)

  10. Hey Austin! Its nice to meet you and learn about your new dog! Like you, I am also a public relations major and I loved how you described it (whenever I tell people that I am a pr major they think I work in publicity!) It sounds like you have a great internship! I love social media creation and its great that you are getting experience with it! I look forward to reading your work and I hope you have a great senior year with your new dog!!

  11. Hi Austin! I am a journalist student and I work in the advising office of Gaylord so I pretty much live there haha. I am so jealous that you have a dog – I have been wanting to get either a dog or a cat for the past three years. I loved getting to read a little bit about you and am excited to read more of your posts in the future!

  12. Hey Austin! I'm also a PR major, so I'm sure we've probably had some classes together. I'm sure you spend a lot of time with Pritch, as well. I think it's awesome that you have specific long-term goals. I'm an intern for a start up communications firm and my boss sits on a few boards for artistic and philanthropic organizations and we also do a lot of work with the Kirkpatrick Family Fund and Kirkpatrick Foundation. They do a lot of awesome community work, so you should check it out!

  13. Austin, you and I have a TON in common. I too am a Public Relations major and have been in charge of creating social media content for a variety of clients and companies. In addition, I also contribute to a magazine! Small world.

I think it is incredible that you adopted a Bernese Mountain Dog! I can only imagine the fun adventures that you two have. I hope to one day adopt a dog of my own!

So nice to meet you, wishing you the best!!!

  14. I can't believe there was still someone in this class I hadn't met yet! Nice to meet you, Austin! :)

I think your dog is ADORABLE, by the way. I want a dog so so badly, so I love seeing pictures of other people's dogs to keep me going until I can get one of my very own. I love that you have a life plan set up for yourself, and it sounds AMAZING! Best of luck :)
